BREAKING THEM UP
SHOOTING AN INDIE FILM
IN OKLAHOMA CITY
We shot this film in Oklahoma City in the late summer of 2019, one of the first productions to use the state's new film incentive program — a fact that came with its own complications, as three other productions were shooting in the city that same summer. Temperatures pushed well past 100 degrees most days, and our grassroots approach meant building the production entirely within the surrounding community: local crew, every scene filmed on location, and many background cast from the local Boys & Girls Club.
Breaking Them Up earned acceptances at Newport Beach Film Festival and deadCenter Film Festival before the festival circuit was upended by COVID-19 delays. The film went on to a theatrical, VOD, international, and streaming release in fall 2020 — a rollout that, like everything else that year, met real headwinds, both in reaching audiences and in the sales process itself.
